HOPE FOR TOMORROW, STRENGTH FOR TODAY

By Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan

Iguazu Falls, located on the border of Brazil and Argentina, is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders. It consists of 275 separate waterfalls that span over 1.67 miles along the Iguazu River. The name “Iguazu” comes from the Guarani or Tupi words “y” (water) and “ûasú” (big), meaning “big water.”

Carved into a wall on the Brazilian side of the falls is a verse from the Bible, “Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!” (Psalm 93:4). And just below that Scripture, someone wisely added these words: “God is always greater than all of our troubles.”

Life is full of challenges. Sometimes, the waters rise so high it feels like we will be swept away. Perhaps you’re facing a health issue that feels overwhelming. It might be a financial challenge that looks like a giant wave ready to crash over you. Or maybe you’re struggling with a relationship battered by storms, leaving you to wonder if it will ever see the light of day again. You may have experienced a great loss, making life seem meaningless.

When we struggle, we tend to take our eyes off the Lord and put them onto the waves crashing over the sides of our boat. It is then that we need to stop and take a quiet moment to reflect on the great truth of this verse. The power of crashing waves or cascading waterfalls is nothing compared to the power of our Lord.

God is mightier than all of that. Our God is greater, our God is stronger, and our God is far more powerful than anything we face. The thunders of many waters, the waves of the sea – they pale in comparison to the might of our God.

Trust in His mighty power. Lean on His everlasting arms. And walk in the confidence that no matter how high the waters rise, our God is higher still!
